Experimental Investigation of the Dynamics of a Wilberforce Pendulum

چکیده
The Wilberforce pendulum provides an important qualitative demonstration of coupled harmonic oscillators, but quantitative measurements are not typically performed. The present work examines the dynamics of a simple pendulum comprising a steel spring with attached mass using an ultrasonic motion detector. A series of measurements allowed determination of the coupling constant between the longitudinal and torsional modes of the spring-mass system. The motion depends on the moment of inertia, which could be varied by about 20%. The pendulum motion was recorded at six values of moment of inertia, and the frequencies of the two normal modes were determined with Fourier transform techniques. The coupling constant was measured to be (5.49± 0.38× 10−5 for the 20 mm diameter steel spring used in the experiment. Correspondence of the measured mode frequency to that predicted by the model was qualitatively excellent, but exhibited a systematic shift to lower frequency that merits further study.

متن کاملFluid Dynamics in a Copper Converter: an Investigation on Mixing Phenomena in an Experimental Model
In this study, the mixing phenomena and fluid dynamics in a copper converter have been experimentally investigated using a physical model. The physical model is a 1:5 horizontal tank made of Plexiglas. The mixing phenomena have been characterized by experimentally measuring the mixing time using a tracer dispersion technique. Moreover, the effects of the air flow rate and lance submergence on t...

The melting of a 64 ion microcrystal of KCI was studied by means of a molecular dynamics computer simulation. We used a central pair interaction with an inverse power law repulsion. The thermodynamics, kinetic and structural properties such as melting temperature, latent heat, mean square displacement, diffusion constant, radial distribution function and bond angle distribution are calculated. ...

Abstract In this work, the role of appropriate mixing for mercaptan removal from Kerosene using caustic soda has been investigated in the pilot scale. Static mixer at different condition has been used as a passive mixing tool to achieve proper mixing and consequently high performance of mercaptan removal. Two lengths of static mixer including 20 and 40 cm as well as two pitches 1 and 3 m...
متن کاملNORMAL FORM SOLUTION OF REDUCED ORDER OSCILLATING SYSTEMS
This paper describes a preliminary investigation into the use of normal form theory for modelling large non-linear dynamical systems. Limit cycle oscillations are determined for simple two-degree-of-freedom double pendulum systems. The double pendulum system is reduced into its centre manifold before computing normal forms. Normal forms are obtained using a period averaging method which is appl...
